Hydrocelectomy Bilateral Procedure

A bilateral hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure to repair or remove hydroceles on both sides of the scrotum, which are fluid-filled sacs surrounding the testicles. Untreated, hydroceles can cause discomfort and swelling in the area around the scrotum. The goal of this procedure is to prevent fluid buildup from recurring by removing or repositioning the hydroceles. Typically, a bilateral hydrocelectomy is a fairly simple procedure and patients can return home the same day.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A bilateral hydrocelectomy is considered medically necessary for patients who have hydroceles on both sides of their scrotum. Hydroceles can manifest uncomfortable symptoms including swelling and pain, and can potentially threaten nearby structures. If the hydroceles do not resolve on their own and conservative efforts such as draining do not offer a long-term solution, the patient may be a candidate for a bilateral hydrocelectomy.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision over the scrotum to access the hydroceles. Next, the surgeon will drain the hydroceles before closing them off to prevent the same issue from recurring. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience some form of discomfort as the surgical site heals. Patients are advised to rest and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for several weeks following the surgery. It is important to follow post-operative care instructions carefully, including keeping the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
